The Old Town of Lijiang:Situated in the Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County of Yunnan Province in the southwest of China, the Old Town of Lijiang was first constructed in the late 13th century. It lies on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with an elevation of over 2,400 meters and covers an area of 3.8 square kilometers. Since ancient times, Lijiang has been a famous marketplace and a place of strategic importance. Now the Old Town of Lijiang is ancient, natural and unadorned; and its layout is in the fashion of a maze, demonstrating the features of a mountainous city and the beauty of land and water. The residences in Lijiang area a blend of the quintessence of the Han, Bai, Yi and Tibetan ethnic groups, as well as the unique characteristics of the Naxi ethnic group. The Old Town of Lijiang contains rich ethnic traditional culture. This culture not only contains the only well-preserved pictography system in the world, but also the ancient music of the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century. Both cultural points reflect the prosperity and development of the Naxi ethnic group, and provide important historical materials for people today to study the development of chinese culture. In 1997, the Old Town of Lijiang was included on the World Heritage List.
